This 14-topic course takes you through the fundamental principles of information, communication, and technology and its impact on society. Information and Communications Technology (ICT) refers to technologies that provide access to information through telecommunications. 

This course gives an overview of 14 topics in the ICT sector.

  2. Introduction to computer systems; Systems architecture
  3. Software & Operating systems
  4. Human-computer interaction
  5. Database systems
  6. Data analysis; Data management
  7. Networks and Telecommunications

  14. Information technology in the professional sphere; Industrial ICT;

Course Format and Structure

You will proceed through this course and learn these materials on your own at your own pace. This course contains video lectures, and then you will take short quizzes to determine if you remembered what you learned or review the materials. The course takes approximately 30 hours to complete. Optionally, you can gain practical ICT skills by completing the 14 practical tasks that you find beneficial. Each lab will take between 2-4 hours to complete.

Each topic contains:

  1. Presentations: A Google Slide (with transcript) to view online and a PDF version to download
  2. Video lectures with transcripts
  3. Self-assessment quizzes to test knowledge acquisition of core concepts

Course Goal and Expected Outcomes

The primary goal is to learn the fundamental principles of ICT and its impact on our society. You will have a theoretical understanding of core ICT principles that will give you a greater understanding of the world around you. Specifically, you will

  1. Have an understanding of the theoretical foundations of information processes;
  2. Know the methods of information processing.
  3. Learn how ICTs have impacted our world;

You take self-assessment tests to know if you have learned the materials or if you need to review aspects. There is no formal exam in this online version.

Enrollment and Dates

This course is self-paced. You will work at your own pace.

  • Intended audience: First-year university students
  • Start date: 01 September 2021.
  • Enrollment: Anyone can enroll in this course. Click the "Enroll" button to start learning!
  • Certificate: You will have the opportunity to obtain a certificate after completing the course with a minimum grade of 75%.
  • Grading scale:
    • Quizzes: 50%
    • Midterm Exam: 20%
    • Final Exam: 30%

Prerequisites and Postrequisites

Course Prerequisites: This course has no special prerequisites. Any first-year university student can enrol in this course.
Course Postrequisites: The learner can apply the knowledge and skills acquired during the course to any future course.

Application of Course

This course is applicable for the required “INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES” taught during the first year at university.
